Flights were temporarily halted at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) due to a police incident involving a single-engine Cessna aircraft in the airspace near the airport.
The incident began shortly before 1:30 p.m. on 15 July. It led to a 39-minute ground stop for all arriving flights, causing delays and diversions.
Authorities, including Richmond RCMP, responded, and the aircraft landed safely. The lone occupant was then taken into custody, with police vehicles surrounding the plane on the taxiway around 2:15 p.m.
Flight Incident at YVR Vancouver
The ground stop affected nine inbound flights, which were diverted to alternate airports. Over ten flights scheduled to arrive between 12:00 and 2:30 p.m. faced delays of at least one hour.
Posts to social media described the incident as a possible “hijacking” or involving a “stolen aircraft.” One witness reported the plane performing “crazy maneuvers” before landing, raising concerns among onlookers.
Video footage posted on X shows the light aircraft surrounded by multiple vehicles including police and airport security.
YVR confirmed that normal operations resumed after the incident, but residual delays were expected as airlines worked to manage the backlog.
YVR staff and airline crews acted quickly to assist affected passengers, providing updates and support. The airport issued a statement acknowledging the incident and thanking travellers for their patience.
While details about the aircraft’s occupant and the exact nature of the incident remain limited, the swift response by law enforcement ensured no injuries were reported.
This event underscores the challenges airports face when unexpected incidents disrupt operations. YVR, one of Canada’s busiest airports, handles thousands of passengers daily, and such disruptions can have a ripple effect on travel plans.
Passengers were advised to check flight statuses with their airlines to stay informed about potential delays.
Authorities have not yet released further details, but investigations are ongoing. YVR continues to prioritize safety and efficiency as it works to restore normal operations.
